Journaling: So why, you ask, am I so obcessed with my scrapbooking hobby? Why do I spend countless hours and some fairly substantial cash on the effort of recording the memories and events of my family’s life through photographs and journaling? Is it a creative outlet? A social activity that brings me together with other like-minded women? Is it leisure, down time, ME time? Is it because the paper and ribbons and “do-dads” just are so visually appealing and make me happy? Is it the accolades I receive from others who ask “how did you ever DO that?” I’d be lying if I said that none of those things matter. But they are not the primary reason I’m a scrapbooker. The real reason I’m a scrapbooker is because I believe God commands us to record our lives in a way that gives Him the credit for it. In Joshua 4 we read the account of the Israelites crossing the Jordan River on dry land. God then instructed them to take twelve stones from the river bed and place them as a memorial of His deliverance. “In the future, when your children ask you ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them.....These stones are to be a lasting memorial.” Joshua 4:4-7. This is why I’m a scrapbooker. The photos I take and the scrapbook pages I create are the “stones” that will, God willing, be a testimony to my children and their children of God’s faithfulness and power in our lives. In this way they will remember the good times and the struggles, and get a glimpse into our day-to-day lives. “Let this be written for a future generation, so that a people not yet created may praise the Lord.” Ps 102:18
